IS CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT SAFE?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Because of the modalities Dr. Allan usually adds additional modalities to chiropractic like bodywork, reflexology, auriculotherapy, and other mind-body therapies like visualization and hypnotherapy techniques. Many patients feel immediate relief following his treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Minor discomfort or soreness after a treatment typically fades within 36 hours.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT REQUIRE A REFERRAL FROM AN M.D.?

Dr. Allan is a out-of-network chiropractic health care provider. He works independently from any health care network and there's no referral needed from anyone. All are welcome!

CAN I USE MY INSURANCE?

We do not accept insurance, but many insurance plans will cover part of the cost. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others. Chiropractic care is also available to active-duty members of the armed forces at more than 60 military bases and is available to veterans at more than 60 major veterans medical facilities.

We will give you a an itemized chiropractic statement for your visit and you can submit this to your insurance company for reimbursement. To find out if you're covered and by how much, contact your company and ask if they cover chiropractic care. Also tell them that the chiropractic doctor is out-of-network. Also remember to find out what your deductible is and how much you have met. You will be responsible to pay up to the deductible amount before they will pay anything.

DO YOU ACCEPT ASSIGNMENT (LIEN) FOR MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS?

It depends on several factors. This is why it's best to contact Dr. Allan directly and you can reach him on his direct line at 310-773-1993. The best case scenario is you have Med-Pay on your vehicle insurance policy. In this case all your bills will be paid by your insurance whether the accident was your fault or not.

WHAT TYPE OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING DO CHIROPRACTORS HAVE?

Doctors of chiropractic are educated as primary-contact health care providers, with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system (the muscles, ligaments and joints of the spine and extremities) and the nerves that supply them. Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions.

The typical applicant for chiropractic college has already acquired nearly four years of pre-medical undergraduate college education, including courses in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, psychology and related lab work. Once accepted into an accredited chiropractic college, the requirements become even more demanding — four to five academic years of professional study are the standard.

Doctors of chiropractic are educated in orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, clinical diagnosis including laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutrition rehabilitation and more. Because chiropractic care includes highly skilled manipulation/adjusting techniques, a significant portion of time is spent in clinical technique training to master these important manipulative procedures. In total, the chiropractic college curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. The course of study is approved by the Council on Chiropractic Education, an accrediting agency that is fully recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

HOW IS A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT PERFORMED?

Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands--or an instrument--to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient's pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

WHY IS THERE A POPPING SOUND WHEN A JOINT IS ADJUSTED?

Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY ADJUSTING THE JOINTS?

Adjusting the joints is simply getting some movement to the joint. Let's take a look at some fundamentals regarding joints and movement. Most joints in the body are called diarthrodial joints. They all will have a range of motion (ROM), and when we refer to adjusting joints, we are applying therapeutic movement to the joint complex.

This could include a popping sound and let's explain further. You can rotate your head to a certain degree, and will not be able to move it any further. This is called active ROM. When you reach this active barrier, you can take your hand and continue to rotate the head farther. This is called passive ROM. Then the head can no longer go any further. The popping sound will take place past this physiological space past the  passive ROM barrier. Most importantly, Dr. Allan provides only the movement that is safe for you.

CAN A PERSON WHO HAD BACK OR NECK SURGERY SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?

Yes. It's an unfortunate fact that more than half of those who had spinal surgery discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of additional surgery. This too common occurrence is known as "failed back surgery syndrome." Chiropractic may help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, if chiropractic care is used initially, back surgery can often be avoided in the first place.

CAN I ADJUST MYSELF?

Remember that adjustments means movement to the joints, and of course you want to go with the flow and move your joints. But be careful to forcefully move your joints, because this could cause injury. The chiropractic adjustments are specific and most of them cannot be performed on yourself.

Next, you want to know why an adjustment is being made, and how you can educate yourself in the process? Dr. Allan can help you understand what self-adjusting methods you can do on your own that will be safe.

IS IT OKAY TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR IF I'M PREGNANT?

Any time is a good time for a better functioning nerve system. Pregnant mothers find that chiropractic adjustments and most of the other modalities at the office help with pregnancy discomforts, like sciatica, improve their pregnancy and make delivery easier for themselves and their baby. Also, certain chiropractic techniques can be used to help properly position the baby for delivery. Adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age and condition of health.
